When I was young my mum and I used to bake together whenever she wasnt busy at work. Unfortunately, being a full time apprentice and part time cake decorator, we didnt get too much time to bake together until I hit my early teens. However I remember watching my mum in awe, all the beautiful cakes she would create for weddings were just amazing. Its something that has stuck with me for life.
By the time I turned 15, I was working weekends at the restaurant my mum works at, in the kitchen helping where I could. I was employed as a kitchen hand but was lucky enough to work in the dessert section, helping plate up as orders came in. The dessert menu was like something out of Willy Wonka. The concoctions my mother came up with, when creating these menus, was just unreal. After school I continued to work in the restaurant on and off over 7 years. In that time I was entrusted with making the petit fours every week, and even help with baking and making some of the different components for each of the desserts on the menu. Simple things, like Waffles, Raspberry Coulis, Chocolate Ganache etc.
It became something I fell naturally into, to the point where I contemplated becomming a chef myself. The major thing that put me off, was the amount of hours of work a week that would be demanded of me. Not to mention I didnt feel I was that passionate about cooking. I simply enjoyed baking from time to time.
Now though, a few years later, and married to the most amazing man, I have really embraced my love of cooking, baking and cake decorating. I am currently living in Hawaii for 3 years, where it is a possibility that I will not be able to find work. So as a result, I spend my days cooking and baking, and inventing and creating new cupcakes for my husband to trial and then take the left overs to work. I am very creative in a lot of different mediums, but this is definitely my favorite form of creativity.
Sweet Jems was started so that I could share my love of baking with
friends and family. It has been a dream for a long time now to start my
own business, and one day, I hope to do this. For now though, it is
simply a hobby - creating anything from cakes, gateaus, cheesecake, cupcakes, cake pops & fondant
figurines that my family and friends can enjoy.
I am currently in the early stages of making my products available to
order, however at the moment I am just using this space as a way to
receive feedback to the product I am creating, and share with you my
passion for all things sweet. I am planning on taking a few cake
decorating classes, so stay tuned to follow my adventures.
Once ordering is available, I will be happy to take custom orders. For
now though, if you have an idea for something that you would like to see
me try out, please send it to me. I love a challenge!!
